Routine of the Week: Epke Zonerland 2012 High Bar

07:05  2016, aliya, all around, american cup, awesome, blog, Catalina Ponor gym, cup, denis, flips, Floor, gym, Gymnastics, gymnastics olympic trials, olympics, Romania  No comments

In this week's edition of the routine of the week, we are featuring Epke Wonderland's extreme high bar routine from the 2012 Olympic high bar final. Full of huge release combos (plenty of kovacs') and difficult connections, Epke's routine in the final started at nearly an 18.0. His execution was also just good enough to win him the gold medal by just over a tenth. Unfortunately, changes to the code did not benefit Epke in this recent quad and he was not even able to make it onto the podium in this year's Olympic games, placing seventh. Hopefully, next quad he can improve and hence, make it into the Olympic high bar final and successfully finish in the Tokyo Olympics, four years from now. Without further ado, enjoy Epke's high bar routine below (from the 2012 Olympic high bar final):

Via Yury Veshkin youtube channel.

Amazing! Am I right? He scored a 16.533 out of a 17.9. Be sure to comment down below suggestions for the next edition of routine of the week! Thanks for reading and stay tuned for more! :)

Going By Nationals: Romania

12:23  2016, american cup, anna, Ashton, Catalina Ponor gym, dancing with the stars, Gymnastics, Gymnastics Romania Olympics flips blog Catalina Ponor gym  No comments

In this edition of, Going by Nationals, where we see where these teams would end up in major international competition if they went by their national scores, we will be testing Romania and their qualification to the Olympic games from worlds. Also, these are the top four scores from event finals.

*USING TOP NATIONAL SCORES
2015 Worlds Quals:

Place      Nation    Vault Total    Bars Total   Beam Total   Floor Total   Total
1st          USA       62.099           57.715         57.198           59.599         236.611
2nd         Russia    60.299           59.907         56.532           54.699         231.437
3rd   Great Britain 59.531          55.566         55.299           56.766         227.162
4th         China       58.931          56.098         55.199           54.899         225.127
5th          Italy        58.290          54.322         55.432           56.398         224.452
6th         Japan       58.033          55.199         54.832           55.799         223.863
7th    Romania*     55.066          52.732         57.832           57.600        223.230
8th  Netherlands   56.016           55.499         55.565           55.274        222.354

Hence, based on the chart above, Romania would've finished in 7th place, qualifying them to the team final and the Olympics. Obviously, this is not nearly an accurate team total that they would've calculated based on their recent performances. And the fact that national scores are inflated quite a bit (especially in Romania). However, it is fun  to see how they would've placed if they did score like that. By the way, these scores are from 2016 Nationals not 2015.

Thank you for reading and stay tune for more! :)

Throwback: Michigan Men's Vault

05:09  2008, 2016, aliya, all around, american cup, Ashton, Catalina Ponor gym, College, crazy, Gymnastics, gymnastics olympic trials, Michigan, ncaa  No comments

In honor of the upcoming NCAA Gymnastics season, we're throwing it back to last season. Remember how spectacular the Michigan men's team was on vault last year? Remember Anthony McCaullun and his tsuk double pike? Well, that's what we're showing you today! Anothony McCaullun performed a HUGE tsuk double pike last year and he often landed it well and even stuck it. At the BIG 10 Championships last season, Anthony was one of the last vaulters to go and boy did he sure perform a BIG vault! Watch below as he incredibly sticks a tsuk double pike!

Click here to find it!

Isn't that amazing! Anthony then went on the win the NCAA title, a huge success for Michigan! As a sophomore this year, we hope to see Anthony perform just as well. Also, did you know Anthony competed at P&Gs and plans on competing elite again this year? Anyway, good luck to Anthony and the rest of his Wolverines this year in the NCAA season!! :)

Happy Birthday Double Full Gym Blog!

Fairly soon Double Full Gym Blog will turn 1. I want to thank all of you for the tremendous amount of support I have received in the past year! I have gotten the wonderful opportunity  to watch this blog grow drastically in the last few months and I can't wait to see how much farther this blog can go. In celebration of 1 year, we're throwing it way back to my first article. Without further ado, let us gather and laugh together at how dumbly worded this next article is:

Who's Going to Glasgow? Part 1 - The U.S. Men's Team

With the 2015 World Championships just around the corner, teams are being announced like crazy. Today, I am going to be talking about my opinion on the men athletes that the U.S. are sending to Glasgow.

  The Men's Team:
Danell Leyva
Sam Mikulak
Alex Naddour
Paul Ruggeri
Donell Whittenburg
Brandon Wynn
with Chirs Brooks
and Marvin Kimble
as the replacement athletes.
Personally, I am shocked that Jake Dalton wasn't listed as at least some kind of reserve athlete. He is a huge asset to the US team on floor and vault where he is an individual world medalist on both of those events. He missed P&G's due to a shoulder injury. However, the injury seemed very minor. Jake Dalton's absence left the door wide open for Paul Ruggeri who made his first worlds team at the age of 26. He was the alternate for the 2010 and 2014 world championship teams. So, I'm glad to see Paul finally get a spot on the team. Another thing that surprised me was that Chris Brooks is a reserve. He finished 3rd all around at P&G's and I expected him to be on the team for sure. I am not really surprised by any of the other athletes on the team. I didn't really expect Brandon Wynn to be on the team at first but he could help out in the team finals on rings and possibly contend for a medal in the individual event finals. I think that the U.S. men have a sturdy team and are definitely in potential for a team medal this year.

I want to thank you all again for a wonderful year here at Double Full Gym Blog! And let another year of blogging begin! :)
